Redington Crosswater Fly Fishing Combo

Having a few family members who are avid fly fishermen I felt obliged to pick up a fly fishing outfit this past year and give it a shot, my target species of course; bass. After spending a few hours up at the Kittery Trading post in Maine and talking through the ins and outs of bass fishing fly rods  with a local fly fishing guide I settled on the 2 piece 9 foot 6-weight Redington Crosswater Fly combo. My Uncle who has been fly fishing as long as I can remember had recently walked me through tying the Clouser Minnow for smallies so I decided to pick up some fly tying gear as well (more on this later). Not that I am an expert on fly rods or fly fishing at all for that matter, the Crosswater was a comfortable rod to learn on and handled well (from what I can tell) while fighting a fish. I began my fly fishing exploits on small ponds in the spring roll casting small flies and catching an absurd amount of panfish, this is actually quite fun especially if you’re down on your luck with bass for the day. Once I was comfortable with basic casting and maneuvering (very difficult shoreline fishing with a 9 foot rod) I moved on to throwing some light Clouser minnows and Wooly Buggers in the Connecticut River backwaters catching hooking on to smallies during the spawn. I’ll have to say its quite a thrill pulling in a two pound smallie on a flimsy 9 foot rod. Other than traditional flies I found the fly rod to be a perfect fit for throwing small, subtle plastics that I couldn’t manage on my bass rod. I caught a few nice largemouth doing this with white Berkley Power Grubs and 3 inch Slug-Go’s.  Although my fly fishing career was cut short when my girlfriend sat on the rod snapping the tip off, I plan to replace the rod in the near future and pick up some waders for next season and pick up where I left off.

  1. This is a interesting article. I have enjoyed it quite a bit. Lake Okechobee, Florida has many of the finest bass fishing in Florida that cater to retired people as well as the younger generations. If you love bass fishing this is the place to go particularly in the Winter months.

Recently my son recovered my original fishing rod and reel that I had lost for decades. I guess I got to busy as the years went by to take the time to relax by the banks and look back on those early mornings with granddad. I failed to realize it then but, there was a lot of wisdom shared in those fishing trips.
